Top 17 Rarity Tools To Check Your NFT Rarity Score

NFTs are the art of the digital world, with value tied to each piece of work. The very first released NFT collection, CryptoPunks, has several NFTs within that are actually worth millions. CryptoPunk #5822 is the most expensive NFT within the collection, sold in February 2021 for $23.7 million.

As an investor, you may be wondering, what makes certain NFTs priced higher than the rest, especially when they all come from the same collection? In an attempt to provide an objective way of defining an NFT’s worth, the industry has come up with the concepts of rarity scores, rankings, and tools. In this article, we cover everything related to this topic.

What Is NFT Rarity?

The market value of an NFT has always been difficult to estimate objectively. Similar to traditional works of art, NFTs are unique items. As such, determining a fair market value for an NFT is not among the easiest tasks. If an NFT is created by a famous artist, it may be easier to determine its value, but if you’re looking at an NFT collection such as Azuki, how exactly do you decide which Azuki NFT is rarer and hence more valuable?

This is where the concept of NFT Rarity comes in. The rarity of an NFT within a collection is typically derived based on the rarity of its components/traits.

How To Calculate NFT Rarity?

There is no single NFT Rarity Score calculation method that could be considered an “industry standard.” Different NFT platforms may have their own calculation methods.

There are, however, several common rarity score calculation approaches. Below, we briefly outline the four most frequently used among these.

Trait Rarity Ranking

Every NFT is typically made up of several or many traits, also referred to as features or attributes. The rarest trait method is pretty simple – it assigns a rarity rank to an NFT based on its rarest trait. The rarer that leading trait is, the higher the overall rarity rank.

At first sight, it seems logical to base the rarity on an NFT’s champion trait. However, this method only looks at the rarest trait of an NFT without a deeper look at each individual rare trait, which can make the calculation flawed. For instance, an NFT with many quite rare traits will be deemed less valuable under this method than another NFT that features only a single extremely rare trait and a bunch of very common traits.

Average Trait Rarity

This method is based on a simple average of all the individual traits. For instance, if an NFT has two traits, with trait one having an average trait rarity of 20% and trait two having an average trait rarity of 10%, the overall average rarity for the NFT will be 15% ([20% + 10%] / 2). Yet, this method is also limited in that it only looks at the overall trait rarity without considering the rarity of a single trait.

Statistical Rarity

Another calculation method is based on the statistical rarity of each trait in an NFT which is computed by multiplying the individual traits’ scores. An NFT with two traits, one with a 20% rarity and the other one with a 10% rarity, will have an overall score of 2% (20% * 10%) under this method. Like the average traits method, it also overemphasizes the total rarity of traits.

NFT Rarity Score

rarity.tools is one of the leading NFT rarity ranking and scoring platforms. To overcome the limitations of the above calculation methods, its founder has a way of calculating NFT rarity ranking which takes into consideration both single traits and overall traits, known as the NFT rarity score. Using this method, first, you will determine a score for each trait individually based on the formula below:

[Rarity Score for a Trait Value] = 1 / ([Number of Items with that Trait Value] / [Total Number of Items in the Collection])

You then sum up all the individual scores to arrive at the overall NFT rarity score. The higher the number, the rarer and, thus, more valuable the NFT is.

Best NFT Rarity Tools

In late 2022, there is no shortage of NFT ranking and scoring platforms that can help you decide on the rarity of an NFT without you having to do your own calculations. These platforms are often referred to as rarity tools. Below, we will cover the 17 best rarity tools in the market.

1. Rarity.tools

Rarity.tools is among the pioneers of NFT scoring platforms. Launched in April 2021, the website was initially dedicated to a small number of the most popular NFT collections at the time, including the ubiquitously known CryptoPunks and Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). By now, it has grown into a leading rarity tool platform, with more than a thousand collections listed.

For each NFT, the platform shows the overall rarity score and individual rarity scores per trait. You can filter NFTs within a collection by price and rank.

If you are interested in buying an NFT, rarity.tools directs you to two popular Ethereum marketplaces, OpenSea and LooksRare.

2. Rarity Sniper

Rarity Sniper is another highly popular NFT ranking tool with all the standard features for filtering and sorting items within a collection by rank position and price. It supports NFTs across Ethereum, Polygon, Cronos and more. There are close to 2,000 collections currently listed on the platform. You can also head to its Discord channel for instant filtering of NFT stats through its bot.

The platform supports a relatively high number of NFT marketplaces, where you are redirected for purchases. Support for a specific marketplace depends on the actual NFT collection. Marketplaces linked to Rarity Sniper include OpenSea, LooksRare, X2Y2, Rarible, Gem.xyz, and OKX NFT Marketplace.

3. Rarity Sniffer

Rarity Sniffer is a platform that accesses and scores NFT collections within seconds of the initial information release on the blockchain. True to its name, the platform also sniffs out information on upcoming NFT collections. If you need the most up-to-date, rapid access to NFT scores, give this rarity tool a try.

Their website claims to have over 10,000 NFT collections listed. At the moment, Rarity Sniffer is limited to Ethereum only and directs you to OpenSea for purchases.

4. MoonRank

MoonRank is an NFT rarity tool for the Solana blockchain. The platform uses the statistical rarity methodology to score NFTs and prides itself on not using any convoluted or hidden calculation methods.

Within an NFT collection, you can order items by rarity score, date of minting, and date of any changes made to them. Noticed the absence of ordering by price? This feature is not available on MoonRank simply because the platform doesn’t link to any marketplace that lists NFTs for sale. MoonRank limits itself to being a ranking tool only, with no affiliation to any NFT trading platform. The tool sources NFT data directly from the Solana blockchain.

5. Icy.tools

Icy.tools is another popular Ethereum-based NFT rarity scoring platform. In fact, Icy.tools is much more than simply a rarity score tool – it is a comprehensive NFT analytics environment. For each NFT collection and item listed on the website, you may find detailed info on sales history, volumes, floor prices, market caps, and more. However, you will need to sign up for a premium account to get access to all of its features.

Icy.tools sources NFT data from the Ethereum blockchain and from the OpenSea marketplace. In addition to OpenSea, depending on the collection, the platform might also link to other marketplaces to facilitate NFT purchases. These include Infinity, LooksRare, Genie (which was acquired by Uniswap this year), and Gem.xyz.

6. ERC Rarity

ERC Rarity is another comprehensive NFT analytics tool that features much more than just rarity scores. You can use the platform to track, compare, and analyze NFT collections. The tool sources its NFT data largely from the OpenSea marketplace. Like Icy.tools, the features are mostly only accessible with a premium account.

Based on their rarity scores and rankings, NFTs analyzed by the platform are divided into six rarity segments, from the rarest to the most common - Mythic, Legendary, Epic, Rare, Uncommon, and Common.

7. CNFT Tools

CNFT Tools is an NFT rarity tool for the Cardano blockchain. The platform has a simple interface featuring about 1,000 collections, a very respectable number for a tool that services Cardano, a chain with a considerably younger and less developed ecosystem compared to Ethereum’s.

You may sort NFT collections on the website by 7-day sales volumes, number of items within collections, and floor prices. For NFT purchases, CNFT Tools connects you to various Cardano-based NFT marketplaces like JPG Store and NFTJam.

8. NFT Sniper

NFT Sniper is another Solana-focused rarity tool. The platform features more than 4,000 collections, which is one of the widest selections for a Solana rarity tool. NFT Sniper has a release calendar where you can track upcoming collection releases.

NFT Sniper is a great platform for creators as well, with services that help you manage and promote your new collection. For instance, you can use the Rarity Preview Checker to see how items in your new collection will be ranked. Another useful product, Rarity Checking Bot, lets you set up an automated option in your Discord channel to let users look up NFT rarities with a single command.

9. DappRadar

DappRadar is one of the largest and best-known crypto data portals. It ranks NFTs according to factors like volume, number of traders, and sales, which informs you of the market conditions in an instant. The platform has also launched a portfolio tracker for you to monitor Ethereum-based NFTs in your wallet and an NFT Value Estimator tool that lets you quickly get a price estimate for an NFT.

Despite DappRadar’s wide reach in terms of blockchains covered - the website has access to decentralized app (DApp) data on dozens of chains - this NFT Value Estimator tool is still limited in terms of collections covered. As of now, only a few dozen Ethereum-based collections, typically the most popular ones, are included. The search by URL function is capable of sourcing information only from one marketplace – OpenSea. However, it is possible that in the future the DappRadar team will integrate the platform’s vast reach into the NFT Value Estimator, and we will see more chains and marketplaces included in the tool.

10. RankNFT

RankNFT is a website that provides scores and rankings for NFTs from two popular platforms – Ethereum and Polygon. RankNFT links to two large marketplaces – OpenSea and LooksRare.

As of the time of writing, the platform lists nearly 3,000 collections, about 2,300 from Ethereum and over 500 from Polygon. The majority of the leading collections on the market, such as CryptoPunks, BAYC, Azuki, and Clone X – X Takashi Murakami, are represented on the platform.

11. NFTSniff

NFTSniff is a rarity tool that specializes in scoring and tracking rare NFT collections. The platform sources NFT data from Ethereum and the OpenSea marketplace.

NFTSniff does a very good job of quickly capturing and listing information about new NFTs. Most of the information becomes available within seconds of a collection’s release.

Similar to the majority of other rarity tools on the market, NFTSniff has a paid premium version where you can access a lot more analytics than in the free version, such as scanning for rarity, reveal alerts, and mint alerts.

12. NFTBank

NFTBank is a leading NFT valuation tool in the market for those who want to manage the NFTs that they own. Through NFTBank, you get to create your own portfolio where you can find out your ROIs and even file taxes.

For every NFT on the platform, you can see estimated prices, floor prices, rarity rank and score, and more, which can help you glean further insights on an NFT you are interested in. The tool supports Ethereum-based NFTs.

13. HowRare

HowRare is a rarity tool that analyzes and scores NFTs on three blockchain networks – Solana, NEAR Protocol and Aptos. The platform currently has nearly 1,300 collections from Solana, 88 collections from NEAR Protocol, and 29 collections from Aptos.

HowRare gives you the option to view NFT scores based on three different calculation methods – trait normalized, statistical, and a proprietary method developed by the platform. This is useful if you want to see NFT scores based on some standardized, widely available methodology rather than a proprietary black box algorithm.

14. CryptoSlam

CryptoSlam is among the largest NFT data aggregators in the industry. The website lists NFT sales and ranking data that covers dozens of blockchain platforms, including all the leading ones. By the sheer number of chains included, CryptoSlam is the undisputed leader in our list. However, CryptoSlam is not a specialized NFT rarity tool. Rather, it acts as a generalized NFT data aggregator.

Among the rich set of NFT analytics provided by CryptoSlam, you can get collection rankings, though rarity scores are not available. If rankings, rather than absolute scores, are what you are after, CryptoSlam could be a great resource thanks to its massive breadth of coverage.

15. Moby

Moby is an NFT tracking and analytics tool with a diverse range of functions. As part of its suite of services, Moby provides NFT ranking and scoring data. However, Moby is much more than just rarity scores or ranks. With a premium subscription, you will receive detailed information on Ethereum-based NFTs such as sales volumes, prices, transactions, mint events, and even whale statistics.

The rich insights offered by Moby are sourced by scanning the Ethereum blockchain as well as two leading marketplaces – OpenSea and LooksRare.

16. RarityMon

RarityMon is a discord bot and website for checking the rarity of your NFT within its collection. This tool is useful for the NFTs you own. RarityMon will quickly analyze your NFT and provide detailed ranking information, both overall and by each trait. You will know where your NFT stands in the collection by each specific trait, categorized according to four levels – common, rare, epic and legendary.

A great feature of this tool is access to a variety of blockchains to analyze collections. RarityMon currently supports NFTs on Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Polygon and Cardano.

17. Trait Sniffer

Trait Sniffer is a relatively small NFT rarity tool. It is based on an NFT rarity calculation method programmed by a developer who runs this project as a one-man setup. The website claims that its rarity score algorithm helps arrive at an “objective” rarity ranking of an NFT.

Trait Sniffer focuses on Ethereum NFT collections. It calculates a rarity score within seconds of a collection’s metadata having been released on the chain. The website provides access to its NFT rarity scores based on paid membership.

Since this is a small project run by a single individual, the website owner has limited the number of paid subscribers they can serve to 100. As of the time of writing, there are 99 subscribers registered on Trait Sniffer, just one shy of the maximum limit. This tool might be a good additional choice if you like the feeling of being part of a small, exclusive community. However, Trait Sniffer is probably not the optimal choice as your main NFT rarity tool due to its limited size and scale of operations.

Conclusion

Some of the NFT rarity tools we have covered are the niche leaders, where users flock to get the most reliable scores and rankings. Others have more specialized uses besides mere scoring such as the inclusion of a detailed pricing data, while some are useful for your own NFTs. Do note, however, that the field of NFT scoring and ranking is fast-changing, with new providers and methodologies popping up left, right, and center. Thus, keep an eye on the space for updates and new platforms. For now, happy scoring!
