What Is Avail?

Avail is a data availability blockchain designed to unify web3 ecosystems, enhancing blockchain scalability, interoperability and security.

History of Avail

The Avail project was initiated by the team at Polygon Labs in late 2020, inspired by the need for a robust data availability solution in blockchain architecture, and was later spun off as a separate entity to focus on its mission. Avail aims to empower builders by providing a highly scalable modular consensus layer, enabling them to create innovative and high-performing applications without worrying about underlying blockchain complexities.

The key driver behind Avail is the importance of data availability sampling (DAS) for the scalability and efficiency of blockchains. By addressing these core issues, Avail provides a foundational layer that supports the creation of rollups and other blockchain applications — and attracts significant investment and interest from the blockchain community.

What Does Avail Aim to Achieve?

Avail aims to address the challenges of user fragmentation and scalability in the web3 ecosystem. By tackling these problems, Avail promises a unified, efficient platform for both users and developers from any ecosystem.

• User fragmentation: The web3 environment is permissionless, leading to groundbreaking technologies but also causing a fragmented user experience. Avail’s Unification Layer seeks to create a cohesive whole for end-users while maintaining a decentralized ethos.

• Scalability issues: Despite innovative solutions across the web3 tech stack, scalability remains a hurdle for mass adoption. Avail introduces components like Avail DA, Nexus and Fusion Security to form a Unification Layer that promises a scalable, interconnected web3 experience.

• Cross-ecosystem transactions: Currently, transactions across different blockchain networks are cumbersome, impeding user adoption. Avail’s approach is to simplify these transactions, making it easier for new users to join the web3 community.

• Asynchronous microservices: Drawing lessons from Web 2.0, Avail leverages asynchronous microservices to scale blockchains. This method allows for independent scaling of services (similar to the way that Amazon and Visa operate during high-demand periods), suggesting a similar scalable future for blockchains.

How Does Avail Work?

Traditional blockchains face a significant challenge in storing and verifying large volumes of transaction data. As more transactions occur, the system becomes slower and less efficient. Avail addresses this issue by separating data storage from transaction processing. It acts as a dedicated verification solution, ensuring that data required to verify transactions is always accessible without overloading the network.

Avail uses zero-knowledge technology consisting of three key components: Avail Nexus, Avail DA and Avail Fusion. These components work together to form its Unification Layer for web3, improving scalability and user experience.

Avail employs data availability sampling (DAS) and KZG polynomial commitments to efficiently verify data correctness. This approach ensures near-perfect data availability guarantees without relying on fraud proofs.

Avail’s technology streamlines the verification process and encourages trust within the ecosystem. These features facilitate a unified web3 experience, enabling blockchains to handle enormous data loads effectively.

Features of Avail

Avail DA

Avail DA is a foundational data availability layer that acts as a scalable and shared source of truth for blockchain networks, ensuring all data is present and nothing is hidden. It addresses blockchain scalability by providing abundant data availability blob space, which is essential for scaling rollups and blockchains. This feature supports advanced technologies like validity proofs and data availability sampling, and is compatible with major rollup stacks and non-EVM execution environments.

Avail Fusion

Avail Fusion enhances the security of the Avail ecosystem by incorporating native assets from mature ecosystems like BTC and ETH, as well as new rollup tokens, into its consensus mechanism. By implementing multi-asset staking, Fusion secures the infrastructure of Avail's Unification Layer. Stakers receive AVAIL as rewards and contribute additional security through their holdings of established crypto assets (such as BTC and ETH). This integrated approach ensures a robust and secure foundation for Avail's operations.

Avail Nexus

Avail Nexus is a ZK coordination rollup that acts as a verification hub, unifying rollups and providing seamless communication between them by leveraging Avail DA as the root of trust. As the interoperability component, Avail Nexus processes cross-chain transactions, enabling users to access multiple blockchains without the need for manual bridging. Built on top of Avail DA, Avail Nexus integrates directly into user applications, facilitating efficient and secure cross-ecosystem interactions.

Avail Road Map

The Avail project’s key milestones are as follows:

• 2021: Avail originates from Polygon Labs, later becoming an independent project.

• June 2023, Kate testnet launch: The successful deployment of the Kate Testnet, with features like data availability sampling, erasure coding and KZG commitments, lays a solid foundation for future development and network resilience.

• November 2023, Clash of Nodes testnet: This incentivized testnet engages the community in challenges to battle-test the network, preparing for a seamless transition to the upcoming mainnet.

• December 2023, grants program: Avail launches a grants program to support developers working on innovative projects that align with their mission, helping to scale the Avail ecosystem.

• June 2024, funding round: Avail secures $43 million in a heavily oversubscribed Series A funding round, in addition to the existing corpus of $32 million from previous pre-seed and seed rounds.

Before the mainnet launch, there are several crucial steps remaining:

• Light client challenge: This challenge allows the community to participate in the network and helps test the unique light clients powered by data availability sampling, which is crucial for the security of the Avail network.

• Final testnet: The final testnet is almost ready for deployment. It will operate indefinitely alongside the Avail mainnet, with the Goldberg (Clash of Nodes) testnet running temporarily in parallel.

• Tooling and infrastructure optimization: Enhancements are being made to the bridging UI, hardware wallet support and other infrastructure to ensure smooth deployments and monitoring after the mainnet release.

• Preparing for production: The core development team is refining its incident management and critical response processes in order to effectively handle any emergencies post-launch.

• Completion of Clash of Nodes: Ongoing incentivized testnet phase will soon complete.

• Finalizing the validator set: The journey to 1K validators began with the Clash of Nodes Testnet. Over 300 validators have already participated, and the validator count will gradually increase for the Avail DA mainnet launch, ensuring a strong and decentralized security layer.

AVAIL Tokenomics

AVAIL is the native token of the Avail platform, powering its core products. It’s used for transaction fees within the network, and can be staked by users to participate in the consensus mechanism. Additionally, token holders can engage in governance, influencing decisions and future developments of the Avail network.

No official details of AVAIL’s tokenomics have been released by the project team. However, Avail has allocated a total of 600 million AVAIL tokens in the Unification Airdrop announced in April 2024. Claimants will receive the tokens once the Avail DA goes live.
