What is CFD on Bybit? A beginner's guide to TradFi CFD trading

A CFD (contract for difference) is a derivative that lets you profit from price movements in an asset without owning it. On Bybit, CFD is the trading product within the TradFi section, giving you access to more than 400 traditional financial instruments including forex, gold, indices, stocks and commodities. If you've used Bybit TradFi before, note that the product previously called "TradFi" was renamed to CFD in July 2026.

Key Takeaways:

• CFD on Bybit offers 400+ instruments across forex, metals, indices, stocks and commodities with up to 500x leverage.

• It requires a dedicated MT5 CFD Account, separate from your Unified Trading Account. Balances are displayed as USDx at a 1:1 ratio with USDT.

• Two fee modes are available: Zero-Fee Mode (costs in the spread) and Tight-Spread Mode (narrower spreads with separate commissions).

What is a CFD?

A contract for difference (CFD) is a type of derivative. When you open a CFD position, you don't buy or sell the underlying asset itself. Instead, you agree to exchange the difference in the asset's price between when the position opens and when it closes.

If the price moves in your favor, you profit from that difference. If it moves against you, you incur a loss. CFDs are widely used in traditional finance for trading forex, stocks, commodities and indices without needing to own or store the underlying asset.

Example: You believe gold will rise. You open a long CFD position on XAUUSD at $2,400. Gold rises to $2,420 and you close the position. You profit from the $20 difference per unit (before fees). If gold had fallen to $2,380 instead, you would have lost $20 per unit.

How does CFD work on Bybit?

Bybit CFD is powered by Infracapital, licensed by the Mauritius FSC. You can trade CFDs through MetaTrader 5 (MT5), the Bybit App or Bybit web, giving you flexibility to choose the platform that suits your workflow. The product brings professional-grade trading tools to the Bybit ecosystem while remaining fully integrated with your Bybit account.

Orders are placed using standard lot sizes. The platform includes advanced charting with a full range of technical indicators, and through MT5 supports Expert Advisors (EAs) for automated trading strategies. Trading hours follow traditional market schedules, with most instruments available 24 hours a day, 5 days a week (Monday to Friday).

What is the MT5 CFD Account?

CFD trading on Bybit requires a dedicated MT5 CFD Account. This is separate from your Unified Trading Account (UTA), but it's not a separate Bybit login. It's simply a different trading account within the same Bybit ecosystem, designed specifically for CFD trading.

Setting up your MT5 CFD Account:

App

1. Navigate to the TradFi section at the bottom and select CFD

2. Click Apply to create your MT5 CFD Account

3. Transfer USDT or BYUSDT from your main account into the MT5 CFD Account

4. Your balance will be displayed as USDx at a 1:1 ratio and you can start trading

Web

1. Navigate to the TradFi section at the bottom and select CFD

2. Follow the same steps above to create your MT5 CFD account

About USDx: Once USDT or BYUSDT is transferred into your MT5 CFD Account, the balance is represented as USDx. This is an internal display unit used for accounting purposes at a 1:1 ratio with USDT. USDx is not a cryptocurrency and cannot be deposited or withdrawn directly. When funds are transferred out of the MT5 CFD Account, they are returned as the supported underlying asset (such as USDT or BYUSDT), rather than USDx.

Fee modes: Zero-Fee vs. Tight-Spread

CFD on Bybit offers two account modes that differ in how trading costs are charged, rather than what you can trade. Both modes give you access to the same markets, the same platform and the same instruments.

Zero-Fee Mode is the default account mode. No separate commission is charged. Instead, trading costs are included in the spread between the buy and sell price. This makes cost calculation simple: what you see in the spread is what you pay. It works well for beginners and traders who prefer straightforward pricing.

Tight-Spread Mode offers narrower spreads with commissions calculated separately. It is designed for traders who prioritize pricing precision and execute trades frequently. The narrower spreads can benefit active and high-frequency traders who place many trades and want more precise pricing.

These pricing models are commonly used by traditional forex platform and CFD brokers. Users can switch between modes. Switching requires meeting Bybit's eligibility requirements, such as maintaining the required account balance and having no open or pending orders. Refer to the Help Center for the latest switching requirements.

What can you trade?

CFD on Bybit gives you access to more than 400 instruments across five major asset classes:

• Forex: Major, minor and exotic currency pairs (e.g., EUR/USD, GBP/JPY, USD/TRY)

• Metals: Gold, silver, Palladium and Platinum (e.g., XAUUSD, XAGUSD, XPDUSD, XPTUSD)

• Indices: Global benchmarks including the S&P 500, Nasdaq, Dow Jones and more

• Stocks: Listed equities across US, European and Asia-Pacific markets

• Commodities: Energy instruments including oil and natural gas

Trading hours vary depending on the instrument, which you can view on the Contract’s Info tab. Forex markets are generally available 24 hours a day during weekdays, while Indices, Commodities, and US Stocks trade according to their respective market sessions.

Leverage and risk management

CFD on Bybit offers leverage of up to 500x. Available leverage depends on the instrument and asset class. Leverage is fixed per instrument and cannot be adjusted manually.

Leverage allows you to control a larger position with a smaller amount of capital. A 100x leverage on a $100 margin means you're controlling a $10,000 position. This amplifies both potential profits and potential losses.

Key points to understand:

• If the market moves against your position by enough to exhaust your margin, your position may be liquidated

• Higher leverage means smaller price movements can trigger liquidation

• Risk management tools such as stop-loss orders can help limit potential losses

Who is CFD best for?

CFD on Bybit suits several types of traders:

• MT5 users: If you're already familiar with MetaTrader 5, the MT5 workflow, charting tools and Expert Advisors will already be familiar.

• Traditional broker migrants: Traders coming from forex or CFD brokers will find a familiar lot-based, spread-priced environment without needing to learn a new platform.

• Automation-focused traders: Expert Advisors and custom indicators on MT5 give you the tools to build and run automated strategies.

• Traders wanting breadth: With 400+ instruments across five asset classes, CFD offers the broadest market selection within the TradFi section.

• Cost-conscious traders: CFD supports lower trading fees compared to other Bybit trading products, making it suitable for frequent traders looking to minimize costs.

If you prefer 24/7 trading through your existing Bybit UTA without setting up a separate account, TradFi Perpetuals may be a better fit. For a detailed side-by-side, see the CFD vs. TradFi Perpetuals comparison.

The bottom line

CFD on Bybit brings professional trading tools and 400+ traditional market instruments to the Bybit ecosystem through a dedicated account. Two fee modes give you flexibility: Zero-Fee for simplicity or Tight-Spread for tighter execution. If you're already comfortable with MT5 or want the broadest range of traditional market instruments on Bybit, CFD is the platform's most symbol-rich TradFi product.
